The Amautik is the parka made and worn by Native Arctic People. These oversize, pullover parkas were traditionally made with caribou pelts and kept them warm through the icy cold winter months. Native Arctic People had a high reverence for the animals they hunted and used for sustenance, and they honored the animals by incorporating patterns and shapes into the garments that echoed their spirit and form. My amautik was constructed using a traditional Native pattern, and I hand-felted the material in hues and motifs that echo the spectacular arctic landscape.
Hand-felted wool, cotton, thread.
